Education In Sparta, Ancient Greece

The education in Sparta, Ancient Greece was extremly different to the education most children are receiving these days. The boys and girls were however treated differently and they had two seperate areas of education.

Imagine being a 7 year old boy who has grown up in Sparta his whole life.  You are now leaving your family and going to spend the next part of your life growing up and training to be a Spartan Soldier in a Spartan Soldier Military Camp. At the camp the boys were pushed to extreme limits and often did activities which were not good for their health. However they did this to teach them discipline. Some of the things they had to do were go without food for days and had to march on rock and painful floors which cut up their feet.

Do you agree with how the Spartan boys and girls were taught their education?

Which Education would you perfer to have ?

Which education out of the boys or girls do you believe would be most helpful in life?

When the girls turned 7 they were not sent to the Spartan military camp but instead were sent to school. There they learnt gymnastics, wrestling and were taught to fight. They would also complete in other athletic events. However they never did anything as brutal and as tricky as the boys because girls were not pictured as being tough enough. They stayed there until they were around 15-18 years old. The harder they trained the better they would be graded at the end. The girls would want to be as strong as possible because that means their children would end up being strong and powerful.
